How to make Davy a Happy Boy…

Posted Aug 25, 2009 by Davy

Hi there folks,

Lots of very exciting things going on right now that I have to tell you about!  This post is really for the guitar nerds out there (of which I am a massive culprit).  Lately I have completely changed my guitar setup from what it used to be.  First let me talk about my amps.  I’m very excited to be working with a wonderful company called Budda Amplification (http://www.budda.com).  Let me tell you I have never had a setup so reliable and consistent (or loud!).  These things are truly amazing.  Currently my amp rig consists of three of their Superdrive 30 heads, one main (that runs a Budda 2x12 cabinet and a Marshall vintage series 2x12), one that runs my Motion Sound rotary speaker , and one spare.

Right. Guitars.
Although I still love my Strat (I don’t play it live anymore but will never let it go!) I started using Paul Reed Smith guitars, which I completely believe are the best out there by far.  I visited the factory a few days ago and I’m just blown away by the passion and attention to detail that every single one of the employees have for making these fine geetars.  At the moment I am using 3 live,  a Smokeburst McCarty as my main, a custom made McCarty in a vintage natural (with nitro finish!) and a white SE One that they made with the band’s logo on it (tuned to open D for slide). HERE is where it gets really exciting though.  Upon meeting Paul Smith at the factory he turned me loose in the Private Stock section and let me pick out all the wood and components for a new guitar. Here are a few pictures of what I chose!

Here is the figured maple top I chose for it!

Here you can see the Madagascar ebony fingerboard and headstock veneer lying on top of the figured mahogany neck blank…

And this is me with all the wood, the figured mahogany back being in the foreground.

I really can’t describe how much of an honour this is, and I feel truly blessed about this!  I’ll let you know later on about the colour/inlays etc etc I don’t want to give it all away right now!  The guitar will be done in a few months, and I shall be sure to post pictures up.  I’m a very excited and happy little boy!!

Anyways… enough of my geeking out before I bore you all to sleep!

Cheers,

Davy.

  1. Davy, I was at your show August 25th at the Birchmere in VA and really enjoyed your performance.  In fact it was one of the best I have been to in many years.  I purchased one of your CD’s and realized I like your music even better now that I can hear the words much clearer.  Don’t get me wrong, your guitar playing is amazing, but due to the sound system it was extremely difficult to hear the words to your songs.  You are a great singer and it’s ashame to have the music drown out your voice.  I don’t know if it was the sound system at the Birchmere or your own, but I just thought I would mention it.  I can’t wait to hear more from you in the future.  A new loyal fan!!!!

  1. We saw you perform in Annapolis MD in May, so we made sure we saw you last night in Portsmouth VA.  Your talent is amazing and you’re just going to get better & better!  Don’t let anyone or anything change your style!

  1. Very cool getting hooked up with Budda Davy!
I saw you in St.Paul earlier this month.
I went with my son, daughter and the lead guitar player from the band I play in. At one point during the show he turned to me and said “Now that’s how a guitar is supposed to sound”. I agreed.

  1. Davy, saw you guys open for Chickenfoot on 08/18 at the Lyric in Baltimore, and I thought you guys stole the show.  Loved your stuff so much I checked out your site and saw you were playing a headliner at the Birchmere on 08/25 and got tickets.  Y’all didn’t disappoint!  Loved meeting you guys after the show, and I meant it: if PK ever retires or goes elsewhere, give me a call.  We could rock out!  Keep up with the fantastic music!

  1. Davy. I will be looking forward to seeing you for the first time on the 31st of August in mobile..I work a few restaurants down and I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally see the closest thing to Clapton/SRV I’ll get to see. Plus you’re only about two years my elder so its nice to see an incredible blues musician near my age…
I love your choice in the PRS but I hope you dust off your strat and rip it up on monday…i’ll be the kid in the front with his jaw to the floor admiring your talent.

  1. Saw you open for Chickenfoot in Charlotte, NC.  Thanks for playing an extra song or two for those who were fortunate enough to do the VIP experience.  I took my son to the show so he could see Satch play but he was more impressed with your musicianship and ‘pure soul’. You have 2 more fans for life! My son plays Strat electic and Ibanez acoustic now but will soon be in the market for a PRS/Davy Knowles edition!

  1. Saw you at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach Aug. 29th.  You stole the show… you guys were much better than Chickenfoot.  Your vocals are great and I was stunned by your guitar playing skills.  If Chickenfoot did not have Satriani they would not be worth seeing.  I LOVE Satriani but I found myself thinking I would prefer you guys come back out and play more.  I would love to see you and Satriani on the stage togehter jamming.

  1. Davy, both of your CDs are fantastic!!!  You have many new fans in me and my friends.  Your music is fresh and new to me, but it also brings back lots of great memories.  Peter Frampton, Joe Sample and Robert Cray helped me get through college and grad school!  I am so glad that you will be playing in Seattle again.  Looking forward to seeing you at the Crocodile,

a former airplane seatmate (no drooling or snoring on that flight from OHare in May, thank you very much!)

  1. i was lucky enough to witness your show at riverbend chattanooga, TN. I got to be one of the first people to speak to you after your encore and pretty much told you how much of a god you were at the guitar. I have personally never heard anyone crank out a guitar solo like you do. I hope you become a huge success.
